Meeting Minutes > January 2006
Date: January 2006
1. Review of Washington DC region Green Infrastructure online
mapping survey
At the December meeting, participants decided to begin a compilation
of existing Green Infrastructure mapping initiatives--with a focus
on online mapping activities--in the Washington region as a first
activity and as a basis for identifying opportunities for future
roles of the collaborative. The first version of this catalog was
distributed at the meeting (see attached). This catalog is by no
means comprehensive currently, but it does represent the range
of activities of current participants in the DC Green Infrastructure
Collaborative. This is an active catalog -- to add additional projects/activities,
please forward completed versions of the attached survey form to DCGI_Collaborative[at]yahoo.com
Clear gaps (in the catalog and in our current participants) identified
in the meeting: Virginia representatives. EPA projects/participants.
2. Meeting participants' project: current activities, available
resources, needs (see attached resources list for contact info)
CaptialSpace -- An 18 month project to develop a strategic plan
for parks and open space in Washington DC. The project will review
open space needs, management, maintenance and distribution, among
other factors, when preparing the strategic plan. Open space/green
infrastructure data will be developed as part of the project.
USGS CUES (Comprehensive Urban Ecosystem
Studies Program) -- Focus
on biological habitat and land change. The project extent covers
the Washington DC region broadly. The USGS group responsible for
this project has both data and web mapping resources and experiences
that they are interested in sharing with others in the region.
NOAA Anacostia Watershed Database and Mapping
Project -- focuses
on watershed restoration projects in the Anacostia. Any stakeholder
in the watershed is encouraged to participate. The project can
host partners/participants' FGDC-compliant data related to the
Anacostia. Water quality data are not currently included.
The DowntownDC Business Improvement District
(BID) -- has worked
with NCPC data to map ALL street features in the BID area. The
BID is working at a much different (finer) scale than many other
participants in the Collaborative.
Anacostia Waterfront Corporation (AWC) -- particular interest
in data and information on projects and sites in the AWC project
area.
3. Data sharing
A priority of the Collaborative is to enable/facilitate sharing
of data between participants. An initial discussion of existing
resources and options for data sharing was begun. The USGS noted
the current existence/development of a database of biological
data for the region. The importance of metadata was highlighted.
This topic will be expanded in future meetings.
4. Next steps
a) continued collection of information for the catalog of existing
projects and mapping resources in the region
b) identification of the primary user groups and needs for Green
Infrastructure Mapping in the Washington DC region. A questionnaire
will be distributed in advance of the next meeting to help identify
the users (you and others whom you know) and needs/uses to help
focus our discussions and tasks.
Please join us for the next meeting on February 8, 2006.
Next meeting: February 8, 2006. 1-2pm (sharp), Casey Trees, 1425
K St NW, Suite 1050.
